A taxonomy is a hierarchical/nested structure that helps organize content. A simple example of taxonomy is organizing files into folders in Windows Explorer.
Creating a taxonomy tree
To create a taxonomy tree, go to the Taxonomy section of the administration panel and click Add Taxon.
- In the window that opens, enter a name for the taxon and select a parent taxon. If the new taxon is a top-level taxon, leave the Parent field empty.
The Slug field is the technical code that is usually filled in automatically after saving the changes. If not, enter the taxon name in the Slug field in Latin letters, without spaces, separating the words with an underscore _.
Note that it is not recommended to create more than three hierarchy levels as it makes it difficult to find and work with the content.
- Press the Save button.
You can specify the order of the created taxa in the tree. If you want to reposition a taxon, move the mouse cursor over the icon and drag the taxon to the right position with the left mouse button.
By clicking on the icon you will see the next level taxa associated with the selected parental taxon.
In case you need to edit the created taxonomy tree, go to the Taxonomy section of the Administration panel through the Picvario interface. To do this, click the Edit Taxonomy button at the bottom of the Taxonomy panel.
Taxonomy settings
In the admin panel, under Options, you will find 3 properties related to the taxonomy.
- taxonomy_enabled enables your taxonomy tree to be displayed in the Picvario interface. Check the Val box to make the taxonomy tree available to authorized users only in the Picvario interface.
- taxonomy_unauthorized_enabled with the Val field ticked means that the taxonomy panel is displayed to both authorized and unauthorized users.
- taxonomy_type in which one of the two values in the Val field can be selected:
Multiple — one asset can be linked to multiple taxa;
Single — one asset can only be linked to one taxon. If you try to link an asset to another taxon, the first connection will be annulled.
Deleting taxons
In order to delete a taxon:
1. In the Picvario administrative panel, go to the Home > Taxonomy > Taxons section
2. Find the right taxon.
3. Click on the square to the left of the taxon name, check the box.
4. Above the taxonomy tree in the Action panel, select Delete selected taxes.
5. Press Go and confirm the deletion.
6. Refresh the Picvario interface page to see the changes.
